Did Somebody Make a Mess?

Here’s an All-Natural Way to Remove Pet Odors

Whoops! Better clean it up quick!

Pet odors in the home can come from a variety of sources. Accidents are a part of life, especially for pets that are very young or those that are advanced in years, as well as those dealing with specific health conditions. Pets also are known to mark their territory if they are showing ownership of the home or are perhaps dealing with anxiety or excitement.

Additionally, rainy days and a soaked Fido rolling around on your carpets can make for prominent “wet dog smells,” something that can linger in the home long afterward.

For homeowners, the question becomes how to deal with these odors. As a rule of thumb, prompt action is the ultimate way to make sure that that urine and wet spots don’t leave a lasting impression on your flooring.

If the urine stains or wet spots are recent, take action by placing a thick layer of paper towels or some bath towels on the affected area. Stand on the wet area to help the covering to absorb the moisture. Continue this process until as much of the moisture has been absorbed as possible.

Next, sprinkle baking soda over the affected area in a thin and even layer (NOTE: make sure the spot or stain is as dry as possible before sprinkling the baking soda. If the area is too wet, it will cause the baking soda to clump, making it harder to completely vacuum it up).

Baking soda is an eco-friendly and effective way to naturally neutralize odors. Allow the baking soda to sit overnight so that it can thoroughly absorb the odors from the carpet’s fibers. Vacuum thoroughly. Keep in mind that you may need to vacuum over the area multiple times to vacuum up all of the powder. If the area still feels a bit wet or you continue to smell an odor, apply more baking soda to the area and repeat the process.

Sometimes we may not have a chance to immediately address the issue after it occurs. If you find yourself in this situation, sprinkling baking soda on those areas where there’s dried pet urine or prior wet spots is also a great solution to follow in order to remove stains and odors from your flooring.
